Lake Macquarie

Effervescent, ever smiling Tawny has reveled in the Lake Macquarie lifestyle most of her life. After a short stint away, Tawny and her husband were drawn back to the Lake to give their children the same carefree lifestyle she was lucky to have.

If renovating and taking care of her three children isn’t enough, Tawny still finds time to make the ladies of Lake Macqaurie look and feel great through her home hairdressing salon. Read on to find out more about this wonderful Lake Macquarie woman with style..

How long have you lived on Lake Macquarie?

I am lucky enough to have lived in this area almost my entire life. I grew up on the water at Kendall Grange (now called Morisset Park).

When I was in my early 20s I built a house with my husband in the Newcastle area but, when we started our own young family, we decided we wanted them to have the life I was lucky enough to grow up with on the lake away from the hustle and bustle.

So we sold up and moved back to the peninsular and haven’t looked back since.

Tell us what makes you feel truly grateful to live in such a beautiful place?

It’s just so beautiful looking out at the sun setting over the lake in the afternoons, green grass, no fences and coastal holiday town feel.

I am extremely grateful to be able to provide such an environment for our family to grow up in and I honestly pinch myself every day when I’m thinking about living this life every day with our family.

What motivates you to get up and start your day?

I have a 5, an 8 and a 9 year old that keep me super busy between school and extracurricular activities.

I also run my own home hair salon which I absolutely love because it lets me express my creative flair while making other women look and feel amazing. It has also kept me sane keeping my hand in my trade whilst also raising my own family.

Between my husband and myself, we have been renovating our dream home for the last eight years. There’s never a dull moment and all of this keeps me super-stimulated and super-busy.

Give us a quick rundown of your morning routine.

To be honest, I’m not much of a morning person, but I have 2 early risers (and 1 sleepyhead) that insist each morning that I join them for breakfast before I have to get them off to school.

Once I’ve had my morning coffee I’m good to go and, after I’ve dropped the two eldest at school, my youngest and I usually hit the gym.

Two days a week my youngest is at preschool. This is when I get to express my creative side in my home hair salon.

Who inspires you to live your
best life?

My Dad has always inspired me. He has been through so many trials and tribulations that would break a lot of people, but you would never know it.

He is one of the hardest working men I’ve ever known and he is always willing to give his helpful advice and support whenever it is needed.

Who do you call when you have good news to share?

Firstly – my husband. We’ve been together since we were teenagers (almost 20 years). We share everything together and, as corny as it sounds, he really is my best friend.

I’m also a bit of an over-sharer. So, after I’ve called my husband, I will call my brother. We have always been so close and are always so happy to hear awesome news from each other, my wonderful parents who have both always supported everything I do, and my amazing friends.

A special shout out to Em! We have been friends for 8 years, had our babies together and they are little besties and we have weekly gym sessions and luncheons and share everything.

I did say I was an over-sharer, haha!

Where do you grab a coffee?

The Anchor, Budgewoi – This is our go-to breakfast haunt and they have amazing coffee.

Favourite place to eat, wine and dine?

Having 3 young kids we don’t get much opportunity to dine out often, however, we do love to indulge in the occasional takeaway.

For this, we absolutely love Punjabeez Indian, Morisset. If we do manage to score a child-free night, 8 at Trinity, Trinity Point has a fantastic menu and the best cocktails in town.

What is the name of your favourite locally owned lifestyle business (clothing, homewares, hair & beauty)?

I have way too many! But here are a few of my favourites:

Powerhouse Fitness, Morisset – This place has been my happy place for the last 8 years. Honestly, the best way to start the day is with a good workout. Such a good community feel and so many friendships made.

The Coastal Lap (that’s what I call it, anyway).

  1. Coastal Road, Toukley – a beautiful home decor where a lot of my inspiration and pieces come from for my home.
  2. Noraville Green, Toukley – a gorgeous boutique nursery… During COVID i became a little obsessed with bringing a bit of green into our home and may have bought a few too many plants…
  3. Mogully Studio, Long Jetty – If you’re going to buy lots of plants, then you’re going to need pots to put them in and this is definitely the place to get them.

Name a local charity or fundraiser that is close to your heart.

Acute Flaccid Myelitis – A couple of years ago, a good friend of our son was struck down with a sudden and debilitating illness at age 6 – Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). This was heartbreaking to see and any help and support to understand and defeat this debilitating condition will be well spent.

What is an example of a way you give back to the community you love?

Definitely, by shopping locally and pouring the money you spend back into the community where you live and supporting those who live around you.

I love to shop at all of the local stores and boutiques, and where possible, I will look for recommendations from my network whenever I am seeking any services.

Give us one or two sentences that sums you up perfectly!

Laughing with my family and friends at our home on the lake is my happy place.

Something that makes you smile.

Everything. Everything makes me smile. I’m a pretty smiley sort of person and I try to find the good in everything.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Here, right here. We live where we love and we love where we live. It will be amazing to finish our journey to building our dream home and sitting back to relax and enjoy it every once in a while.

In 5 years we will have 2 teenagers and a 10 year old. I am filled with excitement and anticipation to see where they are up to in their journey through childhood and what accomplishments they have achieved.

Who do you nominate, as an LSL Woman of Style?

I nominate my beautiful cousin, Renee Garbett. She has been a best friend and inspiration throughout my whole life. She too has spent her whole life on the shores of Lake Mac and recently reskilled to become a school teacher.

I am so proud of her. Definitely a woman of style!
